I saw it at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival

First, Pharrell Williams is not a musician I really like, but I did enjoy some of his work growing up in the 2010s. This documentary about his life and career, while standard in structure and presentation, the direction and use of Lego Animation as a form of storytelling to tell Williams’ story was interesting and certainly something that had never been done before.

the settings, colorful backgrounds and environments were a very nice touch

With interesting interviews, musical score and cast discussions, it’s nice and enjoyable to listen to Williams describe his childhood and passion and uses the style of Lego Animation. I appreciate that the filmmaker took a different approach in presenting this documentary.

Don’t Ever Change Written by Dylan Altman, Rodney Clawson and Jake Mitchell. I knew nothing about this movie except the genre. And I’m glad I did!

I really enjoyed it

I had no expectations and was able to just let the plot unfold and experience the discovery along with the protagonists. If it’s not too late, I would recommend not reading the plot summary or extensive reviews before watching. It feels a bit like a family drama at the beginning, but be careful because there are little plot supporting elements sprinkled throughout.

Just stay tuned!

Throughout the film, there are many moments where hand movements jump between cuts

Scenario

The city of Nova Roma is pitted against Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who champions a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, her loyalties divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved, in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and doing table reads with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicted” the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin developing it again until 2019.

The film could have been set in a more realistic location

Coppola recycles a lot of styles from some famous directors like Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. His own voice is somewhere in the passing details that unfortunately remind him of his weaker films like “One from The Heart”. Then the fantasy of Megalopolis would have been more effective, giving a sense of wow. And what’s the point of stupid and unwarranted theatricality or should I just say theater? Personally, I hate this kind of approach that makes me vomit Baz Luhrmann in my mouth.

The ending was also good

It erodes the serious credibility of the story. Building on that point, there are a lot of loose moments for no reason: taking off the hats, some weird dance poses during the first scene and the general vibe. Still, I really enjoyed the last quarter of the film. There were thoughtful and beautiful ideas. The story is very good with its connections to ancient Rome etc.

Unfortunately, the clutter and restlessness of the theater are eating away at everything
