(2024). Review of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024) – We are all die-hard fans of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and a little bit of The Hobbit trilogy. Forget Prime Video’s failed attempts for now. Kenji Kamiyama’s story is a prequel to Jackson’s trilogy, but it’s an “anime,” and don’t worry, it’s packed with content. The problem comes in the scale, which can never be large for an animated film, and given that we’ve seen Jackson’s gigantic sequences, the scale of this film feels pretty small in comparison. The film still manages to keep things interesting in the first half, but then it lacks enough substance to keep the same momentum in the second half. Every Lord of the Rings film to date has had a big action sequence at the climax, and this film lacks that essential element!
Set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003), The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox), the legendary King of Rohan, and his family. Helm’s daughter Hera (Gaia Wise) is young and bold and clueless about marriage, but the topic is openly discussed and Wulf (Luke Pasqualino) proposes to her. She and her father reject the proposal, leaving Wulf’s father furious. Helm kills him, then Wulf raises an army to exact revenge. Hera is kidnapped but rescued, then Helm is imprisoned and mortally wounded during the war. As winter approaches, can Hera defeat the cowardly Wulf? Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou wrote a 130-minute film that has plenty of slow moments.
Kenji shot a two-hour film and still left me with plenty of time for a quick nap. The first half of the film was genuinely interesting, but the second half lacked enough sustain or substance. The first half featured three consecutive action sequences that were enjoyable and kept the film engaging. Two of them take place at night, which made the film too dark and made for an unsatisfying experience. With the anime, things are slow and the dialogue moves at a snail’s pace; then you have to put up with the dark visuals – it’s too much to handle. The eagles aren’t used well, the climax lacks action, the middle section has too much drama that slows the narrative down, and last but not least, the predictability of the plot sums up the verdict for you. Brian Cox voices the angry King Helm, portraying the character as aggressive and macho.
Gaia Wise as Hera was fine, but as I mentioned, too many pauses between words feel childish. Luke Pasqualino does a great job as Wulf’s voice actor, while Miranda Otto, Lorraine Ashbourne, Shaun Dooley, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, and Laurence Ubong Williams provide excellent support. Technically, they’re all perfect for an anime production, but it also hurts its human connection.

But where you found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss. SPOILER: There’s a scene in the final film where Sonic arrives at a New York State Park and is confronted by an army of Metal Sonic robots, but Amy saves him. Rose.. I saw Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 a few years ago and they were okay, but they didn’t really grab me or fit my entertainment, but SONIC THE Hedgehog 3 is PERFECT…
I won’t see this in theaters until I get it. Shadow has that Darth Vader, Joker, Thanos type aura… he’s an awesome character who has a dark side… Shadow was in it but was the movie good?
YES THE MOVIE IS SICK…Dr Robotnik’s antics and comedy are very well done, there aren’t a bunch of childish jokes or childish themes, it’s serious enough to include Shadow. They used Shadow perfectly, unstoppable, scary and menacing…The references to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle are also great…a few scenes were corny, but overall the movie exceeded my expectations because the last two Sonic movies didn’t impress me.
